When We Forget Who We Are: Disconnection from Source and the Protective Patterns of the Body

There is a deeper root beneath many of the struggles we label as addiction, self-sabotage, anxiety, overworking, overgiving or numbing.

At the core, it is often a felt disconnection from Source — from your true essence, your soul self, the Divine presence that lives within you.

Not as a concept. But as a lived experience.

Your true essence — the God within you — is whole, worthy, regulated and deeply connected. It does not strive to be enough. It does not hustle for love. It does not need to numb to survive.

But when life experiences overwhelm the nervous system — especially in moments of trauma, rejection, abandonment or chronic stress — the body adapts.

And adaptation is intelligent.

The Body Protects What Feels Threatened

When the connection to your essence feels disrupted, the nervous system does not interpret this as “spiritual disconnection.”

It interprets it as threat.

The autonomic nervous system — particularly the sympathetic (fight or flight) and dorsal vagal (freeze/shutdown) branches — activates to protect you.

This protection can look like:

  • Overeating to soothe

  • Drinking to quiet the mind

  • Overworking to feel valuable

  • Self-sabotaging before someone else can leave

  • Controlling environments to feel safe

  • Numbing emotions that feel too big to hold

These are not moral failures.

They are protective strategies.

They are the body’s attempt to regulate in the absence of felt safety and connection.

Disconnection from Source Feels Like Separation

When we are disconnected from our true essence — from the God within — we can feel:

  • Not enough

  • Too much

  • Alone even when surrounded

  • Driven by fear instead of trust

  • Constantly searching for relief

The nervous system begins organizing around survival rather than presence.

And survival-based patterns often get labeled as “addictions” or “self-sabotage.”

But what if they are signals?

Signals that something sacred inside you longs to be remembered.

Protection Is Not the Enemy

Your patterns are not proof that you are broken.

They are proof that your body loves you.

Every coping mechanism once served a purpose. It helped you navigate something you did not yet have the capacity, support or safety to process.

The problem is not that protection exists.

The problem is when protection becomes the primary way of living.

Over time, these protective patterns create tension in the body — chronic stress, inflammation, dysregulation, fatigue, hormonal imbalance. The nervous system remains on alert, even when danger has passed.

The body holds the memory of separation.

Reconnection Is a Nervous System Experience

Returning to Source is not just a spiritual idea.

It is a somatic experience.

It is when the body feels safe enough to soften. When breath deepens. When the heart opens without bracing. When stillness no longer feels threatening.

Reconnection happens through:

  • Gentle nervous system regulation

  • Trauma-informed healing

  • Compassionate self-inquiry

  • Prayer and spiritual attunement

  • Safe relational experiences

  • Energy healing that restores coherence

As the nervous system reorganizes, the need for protective patterns begins to soften.

Not through force. But through safety.

Remembering Who You Are

You are not your addiction. You are not your coping strategy.

You are not your survival response.

Beneath every protective layer is your true essence — your God-self — intact and untouched.

Healing is not becoming someone new.

It is remembering who you were before you learned you had to protect yourself from being you.

And that remembering cannot be rushed.

It unfolds gently, in layers, in the timing your body allows.

If you feel called to explore the root beneath your patterns — when you are ready — I hold space for that return.

You are not broken.

You are remembering.

With Love...

Debora
